Davie and School on Moody
Davie, the nickname of the authors father, James Otis Watson II, describes his early years growing up in Fairmont in the late 1800s. He frequently visited the Homestead, built by his grandfather, James Otis Watson I, who founded the state coal industry. The story covers the traditions and customs of that period and much of the history of Marion County at a time of great change. Mrs. Carroll, who started her teaching career at a one-room school in Marion County, remembered her experiences in a second manuscript entitled "School on Moody," which accounts for the second half of this delightful book.
