July’s Featured Artist–Holly Hinkle and Kent Mason

posted: 23 month ago by Becky Henderson  |  No Comments ;

July’s Featured Artists are both committed to protecting the environment. However, their artistic talents come in very different forms.

Holly Hinkle, who creates repurposed wood sculptures, is soon to embark on becoming a totally green artist. She has been studying old techniques of mixing paint and thinking up some of her own. Holly settled in West Virginia after exploring the United States from her birth place in Michigan to California and to Florida. She is “unschooled” in the arts which allows her to freely soar in her creativity without feeling it can’t be done. Her wooden sculptures are sure to bring a smile to your face.

Kent Mason is a landscape and nature photographer and conservationist who is currently creating a photographic environmental study of extraordinary wild places in the highlands of West Virginia. This is a collaborative effort with The Nature Conservancy which will result in a book entitled, “The West Virginia Wilderness: A Photographic Study and Conservation View”. For Kent, exploring and photographing our natural world is an inspirational journey of renewal he creates compelling images from the heart that can connect with the emotions of others and hopefully engage them in the preservation/conservation movement. MountainMade looks forward to the arrival of Kent’s book in the Gallery. Unfortunately, we don’t have his photos in a form that we can upload in a quality manner. Stop in and see for yourself.

Join Thomas in Celebrating Mountaineer Days

Thomas, West Virginia, is ready to celebrate Mountaineer Days this Fourth of July weekend and MountainMade would love for you to visit! We just received our book order and we have a wonderful selection of field guides on hiking and travel, and birding and wildflowers to enhance your visit to the region.

Thomas hosts Mountaineer Days on July 1-3, 2011. It is a celebration of our nation’s independence and a time for many of the local families to “come home.”

The historic downtown and rail-trail will be a buzz with crafts, games and food booths. You can also expect live music. M&M Bank Lot will feature Karaoke Friday night and live music on Saturday.

Saturday is an exciting day for kids of all ages with the parade in the morning, the Fireman’s Water Battle in the afternoon, an evening with Elvis and the fireworks display.

For one night each July, our dedicated, volunteer fire department puts on one of the region’s best show of fireworks. We recommend bringing a late-night picnic, spreading a blanket and gazing at the glorious colors! It promises to be a great evening in the mountains.

The fun doesn’t stop in Thomas. Slip down to Canaan Valley for the Annual Celebration of the Arts, including a Free Concert by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra on Sunday and the Red, White and Blue Golf Scramble on Monday.

We promise there’s something for everyone.

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

posted: 24 month ago by Becky Henderson  |  No Comments ;

While walking through the Gallery, we saw many wonderful gifts for Father’s Day and have selected four for you to consider.

Is your Dad a builder or a fixer upper? How about Bob Snyder’s wooden tool box? Bob builds primitive reproductions and wood creations carefully working with pine and poplar. These woods were historically used because they are durable and locally available. This box was hand-built, then painted and distressed in a multi-step process to create an antique feel and patina.

Your Father could have his morning coffee in this unique mug. Jughead potter Ed Klimek throws each of his quirky face mugs on the potters wheel before painstakingly molding and carving descriptive faces.

Perhaps your Dad is a Grill Master. Here are two homemade barbeque sauces from Yoder’s Country Kettle he might like to try. One is a rich and tangy barbeque sauce recommended for chicken and other meats. The other sauce is a spicy classic with just enough sweet and a spicy kick. It is good on all meats.

Happy Father’s Day to your Dad and you.

June’s Featured Artists, Jan and Jonathan Heath

posted: 24 month ago by Shaena Parson  |  No Comments ;

MountainMade is excited to bring in summer with the painting and prints of Jonathan and Jan Heath. Both are amazing talents. Jan specializes in print making. Three in particular being Monoprint, mono/lino and woodcut, wood engraving and linocut. Jonathan is a self taught painter and has been painting professionally since 1972. He works in watercolor, oil and acrylic.

Together Jonathan and Jan moved to West Virginia with their son in 1979. They make their home in Berkley Springs and in 1991 they opened up the Heath Studio Gallery. This is a working studio and gallery showing both Jonathan and Jan’s award winning paintings and prints.

Visitors may see Jonathan at his easel working on a painting or Jan using her etching press to print a linocut. With Jonathan’s “relaxed realism” as he calls it and Jan’s tranquil visions of nature , their work comes together is a most intriguing and quite balanced way if I do say so myself. MountainMade will be showing Jonathan and Jan’s work all month in June.

Mary Ann Honcharik has had diverse interests from childhood, combining the physical and biologic sciences, various art forms and the outdoors. In college, the science predominated, resulting in a BS in Biology and a career in Medical Technology. After retirement, the pendulum has swung back toward the arts with the concentration on nature photography.

With GPS, camera and tripod, Mary Ann has been exploring and documenting the wonders of the West Virginia Highlands, especially Dolly Sods. Her goal is to capture and convey the uniqueness and beauty of this region in all its seasons and moods. She especially likes the interplay of fog and light, being challenge to capture those unique moments which come fleeting and unannounced.

Mary Ann processes her own photographs from camera to prints using acid free materials and pigment ink.
